Former Democrat Congressman Jerry Costello Endorses Giannoulias for SOS

CHICAGO, IL – Former U.S. Rep. Jerry F. Costello announced his endorsement today for Democrat Secretary of State candidate Alexi Giannoulias in the 2022 election cycle.

Congressman Costello, who served 12 terms before retiring from Congress in 2013, also had a long career in working in local government. He was elected and served eight years as St. Clair County Board chairman before running for Congress in 1988.

Costello, a popular vote getter, served the state’s 12th  Congressional District, which includes his hometown of East St. Louis and a large portion of the southwest part of the state. He was the dean of the Illinois congressional delegation and was a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. He was involved in almost every economic development project in southwestern and southern Illinois for over 25 years.

“As Secretary of State, Alexi will continue to look out for the southwestern and southern Illinois and its residents to strengthen the middle class and generate economic activity in the region,” he added. “Alexi will add more programming to public libraries, modernize the office to help reduce lines at driver’s license facilities, provide more remote services and improve the overall customer experience.”

“Long considered the dean of the Illinois Congressional delegation, Congressman Costello has been a tireless champion for working families and always got the job done for his constituents,” Giannoulias said. “I’m honored to have received the endorsement from someone as well respected as Congressman Costello whose pragmatic leadership is sorely missed in Washington.”
