Democrat Secretary of State Candidate Alexi Giannoulias Earns New Suburban and Labor Endorsements
New Trier, Schaumburg Democrats and Six Unions Pledge Support for Former State Treasurer
Alexi Giannoulias’ campaign for Illinois Secretary of State today unveiled new endorsements from six influential labor unions and two suburban Democratic Party Chairpersons.
New Trier Township Democratic Committeeperson Dean Maragos and Schaumburg Democratic Committeeperson Michael Cudzik announced their support, joining more than 100 elected officials, political organizations and labor unions throughout the State that are supporting the former State Treasurer’s 2022 bid to succeed Secretary of State Jesse White.
Maragos and Cudzik are among the Chicago ward and suburban township committeepersons who make up the Cook County Democratic Party organization.
In addition, the following labor organizations endorsed Giannoulias today: Illinois Postal Workers Union and its Northwest Illinois Area Local 7140; United Steelworkers District 7, which includes 60 locals with more than 15,000 members in Illinois; SMART-Transportation Division (formerly United Transportation Union), which represents 10,000 active and retired Illinois members; Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 265; and the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers (BCTGM) Union No. 1, which includes 3,500 statewide members.
The leaders from each of the unions endorsing Giannoulias today are members of the Illinois AFL-CIO’s Executive Board.
“SMART-Transportation Division Knows that you will serve our State as someone whom workers can count on to protect their rights, ensure they are treated with dignity and respect and receive pay, benefits and workplace protections they deserve,” said State Director Robert Guy, whose organization represents workers in the freight and passenger rail industries. “I am proud to offer up SMART-Transportation Division’s endorsement for your candidacy and will look forward to working with you during the election cycle and throughout your years as Secretary of State.”
“Alexi has differentiated himself from the other primary election candidates with thoughtful and innovative policy initiatives aimed at modernizing the office, shortening lines and reducing wait times at Secretary of State’s facilities and improving the overall customer experience,” said Schaumburg Township Democratic Committeeperson Michael Cudzik. “He will protect voter rights and fight against the voter suppression tactics that other Secretaries of State from across the country are engaged in as part of an attempt to disenfranchise voters, prevent ballot access and make it harder for people to register to vote.”
“I’m honored to have earned the endorsements from these prominent individuals and organizations representing labor and the suburbs that are fighting for Illinois families and Democratic ideals,” Giannoulias said. “Our message of restoring faith in government and making it work better for more people continues to resonate throughout the State and as we build our broad-based, grassroots campaign of Democrats committed to making a difference and building a brighter future.”
